The Rendlesham Mystery provides a unique way of developing and assessing students' skills in handling and examining evidence. The unit is designed to help students develop their source handling skills in a stimulating way by focusing on alleged sightings of UFOs around a US Air Force base in Suffolk in 1980. Students are presented with a range of eye-witness accounts, secondary sources and evidence of dubious provenance which they are then required to interrogate, cross-reference and draw conclusions from. The book comes with CD containing not only all the text in MS Word format, but also maps and interviews by two key witnesses as a .RA sound file. All CD files can be networked.

The 16 page book contains 11 pages of photocopiable student material plus teacher information. The teacher information includes a full mark scheme based on that used at GCSE, including grade boundaries so that teachers and students can accurately assess responses. The unit can also be used as a mock examination to formally assess abilities in evidence handling.
