Pack C3 - The Quest for National Unity

The stability, centralisation of royal power, prosperity and absence of foreign entanglements during the brilliant reign of Edward I, 1272 - 1307, increased the momentum towards national unity. Edward I's policy of national consolidation achieved the permanent union of Wales and temporary union of Scotland to England. The defeat of Edward II at Bannockburn, 1214, postponed the permanent union of Scotland for another 300 years. The incompetence of Edward II (1307 - 27) led to a revival of baronial opposition and the overthrow of the King and his cruel death in Berkeley Castle. The accession of Edward III in 1327 began a new age of foreign entanglement - usually called 'The Hundred Years' War'.
