This resource has been developed to support teaching and learning of film theory for students aged 14-19. It aims to equip students with current examples and in-depth knowledge of critical film theory. The material includes expositions of critical film theories, case studies and suggested activities for all levels of study.
The material content has been designed to support progression of teaching and learning from curriculum levels 1-3 and throughout the full range of course programmes available for this specialist subject area. This includes both vocational and academic pathways.
The range of activities and learning materials included make it an ideal resource for Media, Film, English and/or Art departments. Photocopy-ready models and hand-outs demonstrating the application of critical film theory have been applied to a wide variety of films from Star Wars to Pulp Fiction. Both practical and academic study tasks have been developed for to allow for differential as well as access by students of all ages, abilities and levels.
This resource has been developed within the context of a changing media curriculum. The theoretical content as well as the practical tasks has been designed to support the Creative and Media Diploma, Applied A levels in Media, the new (2009) A/AS level Media and film qualifications as well as the brand new GCSE in film studies.
The resource has been divided in two main sections based around concepts of genre and narrative. The models, concepts and theories to be studied are detailed at the start of each section. The in-depth exposition of critical theories and their application to individual films are detailed in the table of contents. A guide to differentiated learning strategies is included at the end of each part.
