Stagecoach English is an exciting, innovative approach to helping pupils not only move successfully from Key Stage 2 into Key Stage 3 at secondary level, but to provide teachers with a valuable resource that can be used throughout Key Stage 3.

Forty lessons, covering a wide range of genres, deal with topics and issues guaranteed to grab the attention of learners at ages 11, 12 and 13, and to keep their attention as they develop their command of the English language. Here are some of the titles to give a flavour of the contents: The Vackees, Lost in the Jungle, My First Autobiography, Time to Decide, My Christmas Diary, Bond in Trouble, Granite of the Apes, No Bullying Here, Cor Blimey! A whole host of activities and approaches ensure freshness throughout the course which is driven by the pupils’ own enthusiasm and energy.

The forty units are followed by extensive coverage of the more formal aspects of written English. Again some of the titles give a flavour of the contents: Extended Writing Assignments from SATS, Presenting your Written Work, Good Punctuation Makes Good Sense, Using Connectives (Plus). This is followed by A Self-Assessment Check List and Learning Intentions & Success Criteria.

Stagecoach English is ideal for use with Years 7, 8 and 9, as the activities are graded both in terms of difficulty and of the ages of the learners. It can provide an entire course for a year, or can be dipped into to provide additional activities to support a programme of learning already in place. Above all, it is designed to engage, enthuse and develop young learners in their use of their greatest asset – the English language.
