This material has been developed to emphasise the fact that solving word problems is an essential and integral element of mathematics and that teaching the strategies involved in solving such problems cannot be left to chance. It is aimed at children ages 8-11 or at the lower end ages of 11-13. The basic skills needed by children are itemised and a 'step by step' structured approach to the main stages that make up the problem solving process is outlined.

The material provides almost 250 examples of photocopiable differentiated word based mathematical problems with answers. Questions are provided for support, intermediate and challenge groups. Problems are organised in mathematical themes like Number, Fractions, Money and Length.
