This science baseline assessment material is designed to provide teachers with a minimal hassle way to obtain clear evidence that pupils are making progress throughout Year 7. The test consists of 50 multiple choice questions to assess pupils' knowledge and understanding of a range of science topics and to highlight certain common misconceptions, and an extended writing question based on a scientific investigation. A marking grid is provided for the multiple choice section to reduce marking times to approximately 5 minutes or less per test paper.

Once collected, the assessment data can be used to establish the level at which a pupil is operating on entry in Year 7. Then, using a tried and tested method, which requires no statistical expertise. the expected progress of pupils throughout Year 7 and 8 can be plotted. A standard distribution, or bell curve system is used to place pupils into levels. There are simple guidelines on how to layout and use the data in the pack.
