This book contains a series of ninety interesting, yet demanding, graduated mental arithmetic challenges provided in a wide variety of contexts, for easy use in the classroom. The challenges provide progress in parallel to the levels of the National Curriculum, concentrating on levels 2 through to 6. The challenges include questions in each test on Number & Algebra and Shape, Space & Measure and Handling Data.

Each test is different and makes use of a wide variety of mathematical vocabulary, especially concerning that associated with the basic four number rules. Each challenge consists of ten questions, and answers are provided at the back. The challenges are also open to being adapted or repeated if pupils make limited progression after one attempt. There is also a page of hints and shortcuts that may help pupils and teachers in their thinking and working, as well as blank challenge grids to be photocopied and used by the pupils.

These challenges are designed to take between ten and fifteen minutes. They can be used as lesson starters, as a break from other topics, or to conclude a lesson. All of the challenges have been tried and tested in the classroom. Discussion of methodology and answers are encouraged. They are suitable for all from SEN pupils through to brighter lower school pupils.

Mathematical Drawing for Display

Mathematical Drawing for Display

£47.99

Subject: Maths
Level: Secondary
Age Group: 11-14
Order Number: 10058

The aim of this book is to provide straight forward opportunities for pupils to produce high quality mathematical drawings suitable for display. There are twenty ideas in the book, each with a clear list of equipment needed a simple set of instructions on how to complete each drawing, and some ideas for extending and adapting the drawings.

The drawings can be produced with only the minimum of equipment and provide practice at drawing with a compass, accurately measuring in mm and cm with a ruler, and measuring angles with a protractor. Examples of completed drawings and templates are included. The results can be shaded or coloured to make great displays, especially when they are grouped together.

These drawings can be completed successfully by pupils of all ages from 8 to 16 years old and are equally accessible for Special Needs pupils and very able students. They can be used to provide variety in the Mathematics curriculum; as reward activities; as an end of term wind down; or as a tool for a supply teacher. Completing each of these drawings does not require any previous specialist knowledge on the part of the teacher or pupil. The hope is that the drawings need take no longer than an hour to complete.

The practice of these drawings should lead to increased spatial awareness and may motivate pupils who find other areas of mathematics difficult. All of these ideas have been tried and tested in the classroom.
