This material has been produced to help pupils reinforce and develop their number skills during their first year of secondary school. It will be particularly suitable for Special Needs students in helping them master the core addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. It aims to provide a well-structured work programme suitable for all abilities. There are a variety of learning strategies, games and problem-solving activities. The work is progressive and has been divided into sections A to D. Each of the sections A to C includes units of work involving different number strategies, interesting challenges, a variety of problems and check test sheets. Section D includes answer sheets, games, record sheets and sample mental/oral arithmetic questions for use at home or school. It is not essential that the child is able to use all the strategies confidently. It may be that they are happy using just one or two when solving problems. Also, although the work is progressive, children may work at a higher or lower unit depending on their ability. It is not necessary for a child to complete all the units. The sheets can be used to supplement work within the classroom, for homework assignments or for parents to use with their child at home. Most importantly, the material has been designed to help pupils develop and use a range of processes, so that they can become more confident when applying skills to problem-solving situations. Most education systems now expect maths lessons to be split up into three distinct but connected sections:- Starters - Main body of lesson - Plenary The objective of the Starter Packs is to engage the pupil and make their minds active and receptive to the lesson content. However, where do you find the time to create anything up to 120 Starter exercises per year? Where can you find sufficient exercises to keep a class engaged? The obvious answer is to buy a set pf pre-prepared Starter exercises. Designed for use with pupils in the age range of 11 to 16 years, with as little reading as possible so that poor readers are not discouraged from tackling the problems, Starter packs 1 to 6 are a valuable resource for pupils studying mathematics. Maths Starters 1 contains 50 lesson starters that are based on numerical oddities. Age 13-16. Maths Starters 2 contains 60 lesson starters that are based on the four operations. Age 1l-14. Maths Starters 3 contains 50 lesson starters based on number properties and calculations. Age 13-16. Maths Starters 4 contains 52 lesson starters that are based on shape and space. Age 11-16. Maths Starters 5 contains 52 lesson starters that are based on algebra. Age 11-16. Maths Starters 6 contains 64 lesson starters that are based on algebra and data. Age 11-16. Most of these exercises can be extended into entirely new starters. With little work, you can make each starter pack into 100 lesson starters. Used on overhead transparencies or on an interactive whiteboard these starter exercises are thought provoking and fit into most maths syllabuses. Once purchased, the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school. THERE ARE SIX BOOKS IN THIS COLLECTION AND IF YOU BUY ALL SIX ON ONE CD THERE IS A SPECIAL OFFER PRICE OF £59.99 (£68.99 inc. VAT). These worksheets are intended for use with pupils aged 11-14 to develop mathematical skills and support pupils in developing a growing confidence in mathematical concepts. A Teacher's Guide section is provided and there is a collection of 31 copiable worksheets for pupils, with the target National Curriculum levels shown and useful advice and guidance for teachers included in the teacher's guide, with ideas for extension work also included. Exercises are based on decision making, construction and calculation-based tasks, and the opportunity to create a variety of objects. Assessment exercises are provided for some of the activities and an indication of the appropriate National Curriculum levels for these tasks is given. Some of the materials are designed to use with LOGO, and others offer the opportunity for pupils to develop their own ideas, and each of these allow the pupil to develop at their own pace, and meet the needs of the National Curriculum and school schemes of work. find out more |
