OFSTED like to see a variety of methods used in the delivery of the curriculum; Love and Ashes uses a PowerPoint presentation as a fascinating stimulus for further written or performative work by students. The presentation uses 45 full colour photographs shot in an authentic industrial setting to tell the story of a tragic event that took place in 1895 in a small town called Cosely. Actors wearing authentic period costumes tell the story against a backdrop of cobblestones and brick, canals and factories. Love and Ashes brings the past to life. Students take notes on the characters and their names and are then given free rein to interpret the narrative in any way they see fit as the tragic story develops. Love and Ashes works well with students of all abilities, allowing the less advanced access to the written task(s) suggested in the presentation. Slides have focus questions and important information that staff can use to enhance student performance. The presentation is suitable for KS2 and KS3 students who are studying the Victorians or the expansion, trade and industry units. The presentation fits perfectly with the Media Studies, English and Drama curricula, providing an effective stimulus to further work. The narrative can easily be re-arranged or edited by staff to differentiate by task, or students as the basis of a storyboard. In order to use Love and Ashes, teachers will need a Mac or PC, Microsoft PowerPoint, and a projector. Available on CD-ROM, Love and Ashes qualifies for an eLearning Credit and will therefore have no cost implications for purchasing departments.
