This workbook, with over 70 exercises, has been designed to aid both teacher and students alike who are reading The Lord of the Flies whether as exam preparation or just as part of the curriculum. The exercises cover a broad range of ability, and many can be further extended by the teacher if necessary. The novel is tackled chapter by chapter, beginning in every case with a set of questions that will give an indication of a student’s recall and understanding of that chapter. Other exercises may call for speculation, or a deeper knowledge of the storyline and text, character analysis, recall of quotes from the text, notes for a potential essay or imaginative writing skills. Some responses will require factual knowledge from the story, some will require personal opinion and interpretation. The exercises can be used in class or as homework assignments, or adapted for use in group discussions, and some can be used as the basis for a quiz. Every page is complete in itself and answers may be written upon it. The pages are also easily photocopiable. Most exercises have answers or guideline comments to aid marking, which can be found at the end of the workbook.
The tasks cover a wide age and ability range, are user-friendly, and are easy for the teacher to assess using whatever marking scheme they usually employ. Most of the tasks could also be used as emergency lessons if the regular teacher is absent and the stand-in has little knowledge of the subject.
