This new elementary course consists of 5 photocopiable books with an Introductory Booklet, and seeks to introduce Latin to pupils of average ability in Years 7 & 8 or top end Primary. Although pupils may not go on to further study they will benefit from the insight into Latin which the course is intended to provide. The course does, however, offer a firm foundation for those who will continue to take Latin to examination standard. The course does not presume any knowledge of Latin on the teacher's part, though some idea of linguistic derivation and historical perspective would be highly desirable. Nor does it assume any grammatical knowledge on the student's part, but seeks to introduce basic grammatical principles as and when the necessity arises.

An emphasis has also been laid upon reading Latin rather than writing it. The course's intention is to enable average ability pupils to derive more satisfaction from their English reading, as well as to acquaint them with sufficient actual Latin to give them confidence to continue their studies.

Each book has in addition a supplement consisting of further exercises, which will aid the teacher who is unfamiliar with Latin to supply enough practical translation (both into English and Latin) avoiding the necessity to create compositions.
