Pack D2 - Henry VIII

The wealth and machinery for royal despotism inherited from his father enabled Henry VIII to play a decisive part in shaping the history of England and an active role in the affairs of Europe. New warships, like the Mary Rose, coastal artillery forts and extravagant displays like the Field of the Cloth of Gold, demonstrated his new power to the world. A dispute with the Pope over the divorce of his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, provided the pretext for the termination of papal controls and taxation in England and the establishment of a national church with the King at its head. Beginning with the over-mighty Cardinal Wolsley, those who failed or opposed him, ministers, churchmen, wives, relations, even friends were mercilessly swept aside and exterminated. The monasteries were closed, their wealth and land (amount to 1/3 of the total assets of the kingdom) went to the King and their sale created a new class of land owners. Opposition - 'The Pilgrimage of Grace' - was ruthlessly crushed.
