This material has been developed to help students studying Sociology up to GCSE level. It has been tried and tested in the Social Sciences department of a highly successful state comprehensive school over a fourteen year period. During that time the pass rate for GCSE Sociology has been outstanding. The material covers a wide range of sociological topics offered by three of the most popular examination boards, AQA, OCR and the WJEB. Included are a number of tasks in the most popular topics of education, the family and crime and deviance, plus tasks in the most chosen topic areas such as sport and leisure and the sociology of youth that have been included in the new GCSE specifications from September 2009. The power/politics material is also suitable fo r the teaching of Politics and Government, in addition to general citizenship courses.

Despite the fact that a stand-alone coursework task will no longer feature in the new specifications, there will still be a requirement for students to be familiar with sociological methods. There are therefore a number of tasks designed with this in mind. All of the material is easily accessible across the ability range and can be used either in the classroom or for homework. The tasks are designed to engage the students in their study of society as well as familiarize them with sociological terminology and practice. A number of them are also designed in order to encourage students to discuss topical issues with parents and other adults that often enhance understanding developed in the classroom.
