This resource pack has been especially designed to address the specifications of the LL1 module of WJEC’s AS Literature and Language syllabus for the 2012 curriculum. The start of the pack gives advice on what the paper requires and gives a historical overview of the major periods of literature that the anthology covers – there are accessible introductions about the Renaissance, the Augustan, Romantic and Victorian ages, as well as advice on how to carry out comparisons.
Following this, the pack works through all the poems in the anthology. As well as providing a page of historical, biographical and literary context, it also contains a table of literature/language features and two comparative pieces (including songs, plays, novels, websites, films, adverts, magazines and newspapers) for every poem. The comparative pieces are diverse, entertaining and sometimes challenging, and many of them will already be familiar to students. The activities in the pack can form the basis of whole lessons, or of homework tasks. All the media pieces included in the pack can be located and played on you tube, so there are many possibilities for multi-media learning. In addition, students will need very little else when coming to do their revision.
The WJEC specifications require students to use literary and linguistic terminology, write analytically, use context to elucidate the meanings of poems, and make comparisons between poems and other literary and non-literary works. This resource pack covers all these aspects in a comprehensive, scholarly yet student-friendly way, and is a valuable resource for teaching some challenging poetry to young people.
Once purchased, the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.
