It is always vital to give young people who are dyslexic, or who have dyslexic tendencies, detailed help in specific areas of literacy work.
But it is also important that they get further practice in general literacy work which brings together the various factors that they have learned.
For example, they may have undertaken work in sequences, but they still need practice in recognising and organising sequences in order to make this awareness secure.
They may have studied homophones – but again they need more and more practice in this area before we can be sure that they have fully grasped the concept and will recall it in all settings.
What’s more, by moving away from the course that the pupils are following and taking them into other, previously unseen materials, the pupils can get a moment’s release from the regular work that they have to go through to overcome their disability.
Furthermore for those pupils who are unable to undertake this sort of work because of a lack of specialist teachers and assistant teachers, it can be very helpful to have a range of resources that the pupil can work through on his/her own, to reinforce knowledge that has been gained.
