Although number work is mainly a left brain pursuit, it can be greatly speeded up by engaging the right side of the brain if we learn numbers in pattern form. Circular arithmetic is a teaching technique for numbers and arithmetic that allows children with learning difficulties to gain new strategies that are appropriate to their way of thinking. The warm up is based on pattern recognition.
The pattern quickly becomes obvious to the student who can switch their thinking from manual (left brain) to automatic (right brain).
Average students will go through this process quickly, good students very quickly, but it's especially good for those students who are numerically slow. They will show a dramatic improvement once they have grasped the principal, though the initial warm-up is instant.
As well as teaching new mental arithmetic strategies this technique boosts confidence and self-esteem and removes much of the fear of numbers from the less numerate. A new desire to learn follows success.
