Resources for EAL pupils

July 2008

Official figures now disclose that over 800,000 schoolchildren do not speak English as their first language putting great strain on teachers, particularly those who have to cover set texts as part of their English syllabus. At Classroom Resources we have responded to this by "rewriting" many of these set texts in new simplified versions making whole class teaching for these mixed language groups possible once more. More information about these resources can be found in our secondary EAL section. Phone us on 01179406409 if you are buying several of these texts to discuss a discount!

Practical Cookery Lessons for schools from Sept 2008

March 2008

The government has announced compulsory "practical cookery" lessons for teenagers in England as part of its anti-obesity campaign. From September 2008 all KS3 schools that currently offer food technology classes will teach practical cookery. The remaining schools (about 15%) will teach the compulsory classes, 12 lessons at some time in their secondary school life, by 2011.

The emphasis will be on making sure pupils can master simple, healthy recipes using fresh ingredients.

Wheras the schools secretary is asking the public to come up with ideas for classic English dishes and international cuisine that children should learn, Classroom Resources is offering double royalty payments to all Food Technology teachers who submit their ideas to add to our existing resources to meet this demand.

Also don't forget that you can order our free Jamie Oliver poster from the Free Posters section of our website.

Victoria Cross Heroes Website

01 November 2007

Following Classroom Resources successful production of The Victoria Cross Heroes Educational Resource we have now been asked to put forward proposals to make the associated VC website more pupil friendly.

The Educational Resource which was delivered with a free DVD to all secondary schools in the UK in July has been universally well received by all institutions. Focusing on History and English we have now been asked to develop these themes in an interactive way at www.victoriacrossheroes.com.

Suggestions have also been made to also expand the curriculum links to PSHE and Drama, as well as develop a number of ready to use PowerPoint resources for assemblies at both primary and secondary level.

Do you want to get involved in this project or do you have suggestions for improving the existing website? If so please email John@classroom-resources.co.uk

No Jam Tomorrow

20 March 2007

The BBC has announced that it is to suspend the online education service, BBC Jam, pending a review. This follows complaints from BESA, the British Educational Suppliers Association, to the European Commission about the £150 million project claiming that the service damages their business. The main thrust of the complaint was that Jam was not distinctive and complementary in line with its charter, but that it simply duplicated what a lot of educational suppliers were already doing.

Did you use BBC JAM? Are there any resources or services that you will miss? If so drop us a line and we will consider commissioning you to write a replacement for us and you will earn royalties for your work!

Also remember, it is "use it or lose it" time with your department’s budgets and Classroom resources offers a case of wine with every order received over £250!

Victoria Cross Heroes

Victoria Cross Heroes

19 March 2007

Classroom Resources as a leading educational publishing company has been commissioned to research and produce a resource on Victoria Cross Heroes which will be sent for free to all secondary schools in the UK with a DVD, produced by and recently shown on Channel Five.

With an introduction from His Royal Highness Prince Charles the DVD portrays many of the heroic acts of soldiers, sailors and airmen, that have resulted in the presentation of the highest military award, the Victoria Cross.

Classroom Resources are producing the accompanying work pack for teachers and schools that will enable the resource to fit into History and English curriculum areas as well as Personal and Social Education.

Classroom Resources Managing Director John Hickey said that researching the Victoria Cross stories was one of the most fascinating aspects of the work and choosing which VC’s to include in the resource had been a difficult process as each story was unique and worthy of inclusion.

John has previously worked on educational resources to commemorate the D Day Landings for the MOD, and artist and historian Anton Bantock is providing many of the illustrations for the Victoria Cross Heroes educational pack.

As a Classroom Resources author you might fancy accepting a commission from us to write a resource that will be sent out to all schools. If that is the case then please let us know so that we have your details on file when the next project comes along.

01 October 2006

Regular visitors to Classroom Resources online may notice a bit of a change. Yes, we have a brand new website!

Given the huge number of new resources submitted to us recently we needed an easier way for our customers to find what they are looking for. It was also a little out-dated and needed bringing into the new era, making it quicker and easier for us to add new resources to our growing portfolio.

We hope to have caught all the bugs during the transition from the old site but if you find one please let us know.

We hope that you will enjoy exploring the new site and appreciate any comments and feedback you may have.
